Coming up for air

Written By: catherinewells | Categorized In: AZ, Book news, Coconino | Comments: 0

I cut 16,000 words out of the novel I’m editing, and now I need to let it sit for a while.  I also just got the digital galley for “The Earth Is All That Lasts,” which is coming out as an ebook from Phoenix Pick, and I’m…stalling before I start on it.  Just don’t feel like getting my head into that today.  And I’m still fiddling with the ending of a short story and have to let that rest again, too.  So what better time to post on my blog?

But let’s skip the writing topics and talk family for a minute.  Our younger daughter and her husband are opening a brewpub in Prescott Valley, AZ–exciting times!  More news when I have it.  And our other son-in-law is applying for a position in the same town.  Wouldn’t it be nice to have them all so close by?  My husband retires soon.  We’ll be able to travel more, spend a little time helping the kids with their exciting projects.

Writers never really retire.  Sometimes I get discouraged and think I should, but then I get back into a novel or short story I’m working on and I get all wrapped up in it again.  Then I know I’ll never quit.  Now, if I could just find an agent who believed in me who didn’t retired, die, or leave the agency….  Yeah, I know, helps if I put queries in the mail.  Another thing on my to-do list, right after proofing “The Earth Is All That Lasts.”

Tomorrow.

More on “Mother Grimm”

Written By: catherinewells | Categorized In: Book news | Comments: 0

I’ve had a request for more information on “Mother Grimm.”  It was a finalist for the Phillips K. Dick Award in 1997 (that’s right, folks, I didn’t win Dick), and you’ll find a brief write-up on my web site under Publications.  Or you can check it out at amazon:  http://www.amazon.com/Mother-Grimm-Catherine-Wells/dp/1612421156/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1364068599&sr=1-1&keywords=mother+grimm

“Mother Grimm” is back!

Written By: catherinewells | Categorized In: Book news | Comments: 0

Yes, after more than a decade, “Mother Grimm” is back in print.  This is a near-future story that was a finalist for the Phillip K. Dick Award in 1997, and ARC Manor has brought it back for me in electronic formats–available now–and paperback, which will show up on amazon in about 10 days.  Just in time for Christmas!

The novel is set in New Mexico in a biosphere-like habitat where people are so afraid of disease that they won’t touch one another.  Brrr.  Has one of my favorite villains of all time, who is so confounding *rational.*  Double brrr.

Book buzz

There’s a little bee buzzing around…says my first four book are going to be reappearing sometime in the next year…

Yes, mi amigos, I’ve been approached by a publisher who wants t0 put “Mother Grimm” back into print, along with my trilogy. So those of you who missed Coconino the first time around, you’re in luck!  He’s coming back.  I have the contract in my hot little hands and I’m just getting the additional paperwork together to send back with it.  I’m told that within the next year–18 months tops–all four books will be back in print.

And if you’re wondering about that sequel to “The Aztec Eagle”…I’ve pitched it to another publisher, and I’m waiting to hear.  Stay tuned!

Whew!

Yeah, I know, it’s been a while. But the holiday season gets pretty hectic for me because I perform with a number of musical groups.  And it’s not over–we have two, count them, two, band gigs this weekend, and a chorus I sing with will perform on Jan. 8.  And news has been a tad slow on the publishing front, so there wasn’t a lot to say …

Next week I may have better news regarding The Crystal Desert–like an imminent pub date. But I hate to say anything more for fear of jinxing it.  Just wanted to assure everyone I have not retired, retreated, or been abducted by aliens.

Speaking of aliens–I spoke with a 7-year-old this weekend who had never heard of ET.  Oh, my.  Generational disconnect!

Irony and “The Crystal Desert”

Written By: catherinewells | Categorized In: Book news, Enrique, EPIC Award | Comments: 0

At the risk of sounding egotistical, I knew this would happen.  Last year “The Aztec Eagle” was nominated for an EPIC Award, which is an industry award for electronic books.  So naturally, when epress-online was close to publishing the sequel, “The Crystal Desert,” they encouraged me to submit it for the 2012 competition.  I did, and yesterday the finalists were posted at http://www.epicorg.com/ and–ta-da!  “The Crystal Desert” is one of only three nominations in the science fiction category!  I’m so proud!

But epress-online closed its doors in August, so I’m up for an award for a book that was never actually published.

I knew this would happen.

Good news! New publisher!

Just signed a contract with Echelon Press to bring “The Aztec Eagle” back into virtual print.  Enrique Aguilar rides again!  (He keeps pestering me to let him post here, but I’m a little afraid he’ll give away his entire adventure.  If I can convince him not to do that, you may hear from him.)

Here’s the catch–it will only come out in paper if we roll the ebook sales up over 250.  So tell your friends!  I’ll be running a countdown as soon as the ebook comes out.

All quiet on the publishing front …

I have not heard back from the publisher who expressed an interest in picking up all the epress-online books.  I suspect she is overwhelmed.  So I’m just hanging out, doing normal human things like going to work every day.  Oh, and editing some other stuff, playing my bass, playing games on my iPad …  Yes, I’m a videogame junkie.  Endurance is my latest obsession.  Although Steamballs is growing on me.

Good news, bad news

Written By: catherinewells | Categorized In: Book news | Comments: 0

First the bad news:  epress-online, which published “The Aztec Eagle,” closed its doors unexpectedly earlier this month.  The good new is, another small press is interested in picking up their titles.  Let’s keep our fingers crossed!
